Department Overview

The Accounting Department at Salahaddin University-Erbil, a prominent department within the College of Administration and Economics, plays a crucial role in educating future financial professionals in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Formally established as the "Faculty of Accountancy" in the academic year 1988-1989, it emerged from being a branch within the Administration Department. Since then, it has steadily grown, adapting to the evolving demands of the accounting profession and contributing significantly to the academic and economic landscape of the region.

Head of department

Dr. Chewar AhmedSalar Muhamed

As an academic leader, I served as Evening Accounting Department Coordinator (2007–2012), Head of the Evening Accounting Department (2012–2014), and currently lead the Accounting Department (2023–present). I also contributed to curriculum development as a Committee Member (2017–2021). My teaching mission focuses on delivering specialized accounting knowledge through student-centered programs, cultivating skilled professionals to meet labor market demands in Kurdistan and beyond.

Mission

The department's mission is to prepare undergraduate and graduate graduates with academic and professional qualifications commensurate with the requirements of the labor market through the continuous development and updating of curricula, keeping pace with contemporary scientific and professional developments. It also works to develop the department's teaching staff through academic cooperation with similar universities locally, regionally, and internationally, and to support faculty members in conducting theoretical and applied research that can contribute to solving problems facing public and private sector entities, leading to economic development in the region.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates from the Department of Accounting will:

  1. To provide undergraduate graduates with appropriate qualifications for the needs of the labor market, enabling them to perform their roles with distinguished academic and professional competence.
  2. Supporting scientific research, both theoretical and applied, with a focus on applied field research that can provide solutions to the problems of field accounting application in economic units affiliated with the public and private sectors.
  3. Encouraging faculty members to publish individual and joint research, as well as graduate student research (PhD, Master's, and Diploma) in journals contained in robust scientific databases and repositories.
  4. Adopt ethical standards in scientific research and professional activity.
  5. Effectively communicate scientific information to a varied audience verbally and in writing.
  6. Continuously developing faculty members in both the academic and professional fields by encouraging and supporting faculty members to participate in conferences, workshops, seminars, and specialized courses held at the local, regional, and international levels.
  7. Guiding faculty members to adopt teaching methods based on the use of the latest technologies, which facilitates communication and interaction with students, leading to creative intellectual development.

Admissions

The Department of Accounting offers two types of study options for prospective students, ensuring accessibility and flexibility based on individual circumstances:

 
  1. Zankoline (government-funded) Study
  • Description: This option provides free tuition for students who meet the eligibility criteria and are accepted through the general centralized admission system, known as "Zancoline."
  • Eligibility:
    • Applicants must meet the academic requirements of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
    • Selection is competitive and based on high school scores, particularly in scientific subjects.
  • Benefits:
    • Exemption from tuition fees.
    • Access to complete university services and facilities.
  1. Parallel Study (Self-Funded)
  • Description: This option allows students who do not secure a Zankoline seat to pursue their studies by paying a tuition fee.
  • Tuition Fee: 1,100,000 IQD per year.
  • Eligibility:
    • Students must meet the minimum academic requirements for admission to the Biology program.
    • This option provides additional opportunities for students to catch up on the Zankoline criteria.
  • Benefits:
    • Access to the same high-quality education, resources, and facilities as Zancoline students.
    • Students can pursue their academic goals without being limited by centralized admission quotas.
 

Admission Requirements for Both Tracks

  1. Academic Qualifications:
    • Completion of high school with a focus on the science track (math).
    • Minimum GPA as determined by the Ministry of Higher Education.
  2. Application Process:
    • Apply through the centralized admission system for Zankoline
    • Submit required documents, including transcripts, identification, and certificates.
  3. Language Proficiency:
    • Basic proficiency in English, as several courses are delivered in English.
    • Kurdish language proficiency is also beneficial.
